ROTAPAN
As I wrote before, I do not remain easily impressed. At 57, I have seen a lot of inventions, but none have matched yours. You appear to be a genius at heavy minerals concentration. As a school teacher (ex) I know everyone is gifted in varied areas. You have done it again. Congrates.

Please keep experimenting, my friend. Something else will come to mind.

Australia has always been a good friend of the US. We have always thought of you guys as brothers.

John,
I just admire my rotapan that goes into the top of the 5 gallon bucket. I think it is the neatest 21st century heavy mineral concentrator the world has seen. It is especially useful out here in the desert.

As you say in your neat country,CHEERS, MATE. You must be one heck of a mechanical engineer. I never took physics in my university degree, but have lots of mathematics under my belt. Engineers like you make life fun. Thanks buddy.

Dredging consists of lowering a bucket to the sea floor and scraping up some of the material lying there. It can only recover loose material at or near the surface of the sediment. It is a fairly random process, but it was important in establishing that there ws only a thin layer of sediments in the oceans, and that the igneous rocks that were recovered were all basaltic, unlike on the continents. Drilling involves using a rig and boring down into the sea floor to recover rocks from underground. It allows you to recover a complete section through the rocks, so you can recognise which are older. This allowed an understanding of the structure of the sea floor rocks which helped to understand how they were formed at the mid ocean ridges.

Dredges can only reach out a short distance from the machines that control them, say a few feet to a few hundred feet at most.

Drill ships can drill 20000 feet or more from ships in water depths up to 10000 feet.

In General, dredging uses a scoop to collect sediment from the floor of the ocean. One bucket at a time. so it's limited in the depth that can be sampled. (how do you put the bucket back in the same hole time after time? Think about using a back hoe to dig a hole in the mud.)

Drilling uses a drill rig to collect a continuous corer sample from the sea floor, down to several thousand feet below the floor. Just like an oil rig does.

I hope that helps.
